Day 2

Today, the only thing on the agenda was a visit from our friends who live in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

We started the day by venturing down to the dining room for breakfast. Since they weren’t ready for us, we waited with the other guests in the living room. When it was time, they opened the doors and we took our seats in front of our names on the table. Today’s breakfast was warm glazed fruit and pecan french toast, with plenty of coffee and juice. That french toast was so amazingly good. We both ate the entire thing.

We then took a short walk to the nearby park to take some photos and then drove downtown to eventually meet up with our friends. We ventured to the Colonial Park Cemetery that was closed the night before.

These gravestones are lined up against a far wall, placed there due to various repairs and reconstruction along the years, causing the gravestones to be separated from the bodies. Creepy.

The walkway around the cemetery is covered in these tiles with a swirly design, meant to confuse the spirits of the many bodies that are buried underneath in mass graves. Yellow fever epidemics hit Savannah twice, causing so many deaths in such a short amount of time, that it is said that much of this area contains mass burial sites underneath the streets and walkways. Pretty weird to think that at any given time, you could be walking over something like that and not even know it.

We passed a ghost tour being conducted from a hearse!

While killing time (no pun intended!) before they arrived, we went into the candy shops at the Riverfront and watched them making their various yummy offerings. Not a good idea before lunch, but we were good nonetheless!

We enjoyed watching them make taffy…the free samples of warm taffy they passed out were an added bonus!

Trolley that runs along the Riverfront.

There are lots of stairs around the Riverfront area…good for your gluteus maximus!

More stairs!

Once our friends arrived, we met them for lunch at The Pirate House.

The atmosphere was interesting, but the food was just okay - just your typical American fare. We then all ventured back down to the river to browse the shops and tour the fair vendors that were setup.

This night, we had planned on going to Tybee Island for the July 4th fireworks being held that night, but we had heard how early the island got filled with people, so we decided against it since we could see the fireworks in Tallahassee when we go home the next night. Because of this change of schedule, we didn’t make a dinner reservation, so we ventured back down to the river and ate at Fiddler’s Crab House. Our table was on the 2nd floor balcony overlooking the river. We both had crab legs that were a little overcooked, which was extremely disappointing seeing as we had just waited 30-45 minutes to eat there. :(

We called it a night after we grabbed our nightly cookies and peach tea from the Inn.
