Rain - A Bad Four Letter Word

It’s been nice having better weather over the last few days, since it was pretty crazy weather-wise just before that. The weekend before last, it rained for 5 days straight…almost non-stop with many heavy times. I know, I know, I’m in Florida and it could be a LOT worse (although trust me, Sunshine State we are not). But damn it, I’m going to complain all I want because THIS happened.

Yup, that would be my pool liner floating away from the wall. Words can not express the feeling I had when Brett texted me telling me to call him just shortly after I arrived at work that Monday morning. This was our conversation:

Me: You scare me when you text “Call Me” and that’s it. The last time you did that, we had to pay $800 for a new part for the a/c unit, and that was just 2 weeks ago!

Brett: Yeah well, you have a reason to be scared this time. (FYI - worst line EVER coming from the man that’s home with your baby all day).

Me: OMG what?

Brett: The pool liner collapsed overnight.

Me:….

Yes, silence. Complete silence. How much is this going to cost me? And why does this crap all start happening once Brett takes a considerable pay decrease to take care of Trent. Not that I would have wanted it to happen ever, but damn…timing is a bee-otch.

Brett called the insurance company. HAHA insurance is a joke. It’s not covered because they categorize it under flood damage, but because we called to ask, they had to send someone out anyway. And that person even took photos of the roof. WTF. Why do you need photos of my brand new roof? Oh, you’ll probably find one shingle messed up and raise our rates or something like that. So I guess that means you can’t even call to ask anyone a question any more.

In the meantime, we had a pool guy come take a look and told us it could go either way. A large amount of $ for a new pool liner or a smaller but still large enough amount for them to reset the liner. Luckily, they were able to reset it. The lady a few blocks away? Not so lucky.

We also learned something new from talking to the pool guys. Apparently it’s a misconception that the pool overflowing is what tears a liner down. Ours happened because the ground was so completely saturated (we have terrible drainage issues that we are now bothering the county about) that the underground water pushed in and up and over the liner. Having more water in the pool would have actually been a GOOD thing in this case as it would have provided more weight against the water underground that was pushing in on it. We also had some foam padding underneath the liner that didn’t help the situation and has since been removed.

They said that the last time a Tropical Storm came our way, someone decided to go on the radio and tell people to drain their pools for this reason. They had 45 calls the next day to fix pool liners.

Sounds like a good business strategy to me….

They even recommended that we plug the drain to let the pool fill up more without going over the next time we expect this much rain.

Every day since it stopped raining, I have been filming the water run-off that is still running through ours and our neighbor’s yards. It’s been dry for 2 weeks everywhere except on our street. This is ridiculous and something needs to be done. Unfortunately, nothing gets done as quickly as it needs to and “rain” has become a bad 4-letter word to me because this can and probably WILL happen again if the drainage doesn’t get fixed. Next time, we may not be so lucky on the cost.

Mother Nature…what a bee-otch.
