Happy New Year

It was a nice change to not have a New Year’s Eve party this year, especially since it was on a Monday. No cleaning, no cooking, no spending. Does this mean I’m officially old?

After last year’s horrid amount of no-shows to our party, we decided that having a baby was the perfect excuse to not have a party and keep it low key. Besides, we never know when Trent will fall asleep and STAY asleep (that’s the key here), so agreeing to a party that would be going on until after midnight just wasn’t going to be part of our plans this year.

We had a couple of friends join us at our house and we walked across the street to another friend’s house for some chili and ping-pong. I didn’t play, but the boys had fun. Brett made us each a shot using a combination that we consumed on our cruise in 2011…Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlua and Butterscotch Schnapps. I only had one so the babe’s milk wouldn’t be affected. :) Pink champagne was on the menu for the countdown.

Just before midnight, we headed back to our house to prepare for the countdown which = me feeding Trent in another room. Party animals, I know.

We all laughed at the setup for the countdown on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve Party. There was like 10 minutes of commercials and then they came back on and immediately started the countdown. We were rushing to get the champagne poured and the camera set up. But I guess that pretty much sums up 2012…started off slowly preparing for Trent’s arrival and then it’s been rushing around ever since!

Our little party animal didn’t want anything to do with sleep, so he rung in the new year with us. I’m actually glad he was awake :) This will be fun to show him when he’s older.

So there you have it. No parties. No hangovers. No fridge full of party leftovers because no one showed up to eat.

Just me, my loves and some dear friends.

New Year’s day was a relaxed day at home. Trent and I went to the park to swing while Brett cleaned the garage and went grocery shopping. Wow, just writing that sentence made me smile. If I ever doubt having Brett work from home, remind me to come back here and read that sentence! :)

Today I am glad that I live in the South and this photo pretty much sums up why.

2012: A Look Back & Forward

As we begin a new year, I felt it would be fun to take a look back at 2012 and a look forward to goals and plans for 2013.

Here are the top 3 things that happened in 2012 for us:

1) TRENT! Not only was him actually entering the world the biggest event ever for us so far, but every event afterward has been made exponentially better by him being there. He’s just an awesome kid and we can’t wait to experience so much more with him.

2) Jobs. I started a new job after my six weeks of maternity leave and Brett started working from home in order to take care of Trent. This was definitely a big transition that has completely affected our thinking in regards to everything else in our lives. I’m not going to lie…it scared the crap out of my money-safeguarding self to get rid of an entire salary, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. A small price to pay for the biggest of rewards.

3) Our Disney trip. This is here because we usually take several trips throughout the year, but since I was either pregnant or we had a young baby for the entire year, we only went once. But this one trip was very important for us so we could get maternity photos that radiated our love for Disney too. It was an iconic trip, our last one with just the two of us (for a long time anyway). It meant that me saying “The next time we’re here, we’ll have a child with us” was finally true after saying it so many times before. I can’t wait to take Trent for his first Disney trip and so many more times after that!

Some things I am super excited about for 2013:

DISNEY!
Our annual passes have burned holes in all of our pockets. Not only have I disliked not going to Disney World recently, but I also don’t like wasting money, which is what I feel is happening when we don’t use our passes. We still save money after the first trip, but I am so ready to start going again after taking a mini hiatus to let Trent get old enough. I strongly believe that you can bring children of any age to Disney World as long as you have the right mindset about it, but every time we scheduled a trip this past Fall, we got super busy and cancelled. We also wanted him to get better about being in the stroller, and I think even in just the past month he has warmed up to it and doesn’t cry every time now.

So now we are just waiting for the weather to warm up and the crowds to go away, but we’ve already started looking at dates for the Spring. When we attempted to schedule our December trip, we were sort of last minute on it and were having trouble finding restaurants with availablity, so we need to get the ball rollin’ on planning out this next one. I also started looking at our Fall trip too. Geez, tell me to plan a vacation and I plan 2!

I hope to include you guys in our trip planning process. I already have a post ready that discusses how we plan our Disney trips, so be on the lookout for that. Big things are planned in regards to Disney and this blog.

Trent
This could probably be on the list for every year in the future from now on. I am just looking forward to experiencing everything with him, like Spring festivals, summer in the pool, trying to teach him to swim, his first birthday, all the holidays and all the fun little activities that make up our days. I already look back at how fast he’s grown these past 6.5 months and it’s crazy to think that by the end of this year, he’ll be walking and talking (I sure hope so!). Oh man, and wouldn’t it be nice if he was potty trained? I don’t know what the average age is for that, but that sure would be sweet! Or at least I could train him to only make stinky diapers when he’s home with Daddy so I don’t have to change him. ;)

No longer pumping/breastfeeding
This won’t be until June when he’s a year old, but I look forward to not having to schedule things around “feeding time”, especially when I want to start working out or accomplishing things during my lunch break….which is almost impossible to do currently. Not that I want to be away from him, it’s just that I don’t want to be confined to the couch. I wonder how our nighttime routine will change, because once he’s not eating during the night, we will probably transition him to his crib in his room.

Not looking forward to?

Taxes
Not only am I dreading doing our taxes from this year, since Brett was self-employed for half of it and we were figuring out the ropes when it came to what we needed to do. But now we’ll have an entire year to account for next year, so I need to get the ball rolling on the tax-organizing train so that I’m not dreading this again next year. Photography is such a random business, you just never know when and how much business you will have. You can kind of guess the seasons, but even those aren’t year-round. This makes tax-time super fun. Ummm, in this case fun = nightmare.

Getting 79 hours of CPE
As a CPA, I am required to get 80 hours of CPE (Continueing Professional Education) credits every two years to maintain my license. In 2012, I only took a 1 hour lunchtime session, since I was unable to do much of anything else due to always needing to pump. So now I get the fun task of making up for it this year by the end of the year. And half of the year I still won’t be able to do much either. Maybe I can find an accounting conference at Disney World to go to. ;)

Goals for 2013

Basically, my theme for my 2013 goals is MORE. I want to workout MORE. I want to eat better MORE often. I want to be outside MORE. I want to take care of myself MORE. I want to be MORE organized. I want to give Trent MORE kisses (is that even possible?). Ok, I think you get the point. It’s about just improving a little in every aspect that I can. I feel like several aspects of my life were put on hold this past year, rightfully so, and now it’s time to pick back up. Lets do this thang.

Also, as far as the blog goes, I would venture to say that the theme MORE could work here too. I want to create MORE videos. I want to talk about photography MORE often. I want to interact with everyone MORE. MORE giveaways? I hope so!

I have so many ideas swirling around, but in typical Mommy-brain fashion, it’s sometimes difficult for me to follow-through, so I hope to get better at that.

If my Fall 2012 Bucket List is any indication of how I do on following through on these things, well…I guess only time will tell.

What about you? Do you stay far away from the resolution hype or do you set goals for the upcoming year? If so, share them in the comments and go get ‘em!

Christmas 2012

Christmas was pretty low key around these parts, as it usually is. It was Trent’s first Christmas and we enjoyed watching him have fun and take in all the excitement. Oh yes, and all the yummy goodies. It’s about time to put my pv.Body workout outfit to good use.

Trent’s first cookie for Santa

On Saturday night, I went to Target after Trent went to sleep around 10pm. They were open until midnight and I wanted to pick up some stocking stuff for Brett and a few extra things for Trent, including some jammies to wear Christmas Eve night. It was so wonderfully empty in the store. I got the first parking spot, walked down almost every aisle on my own and checked out quickly. Not too bad for my first outing to Target without Trent or without having to rush home after work. And definitely not too bad for the weekend before Christmas, especially since Brett was gone for 4 hours circling parking lots earlier in the day to pick up the food for Christmas.

Brett had a photoshoot for an adorable little 3 month old girl on Christmas Eve and then we headed over to his mom’s house for dinner and gifts.

Trent got impatient and decided to keep himself busy

Trent got the first gift of the night and was super excited to put the wrapping paper in his mouth. This was the theme for all the gifts haha. It was fun to watch him get excited each time we put a gift in front of him and inspect everything with his mouth.

Trent’s first Christmas gift!

“Whoa!”

I was so much more interested in helping him open his gifts to see what he got than opening my own. I got some pretty awesome stuff, but nothing compares to watching the excitement radiate from him with each new gift. He had no idea what was going on or why were doing everything, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t excited and happy.

He loves his Radio Flyer Car! This car is so neat…it has buttons for the horn and blinkers, a turn key and plays music! We push him for now, but when he gets older, he can scoot himself. He was a natural…he grabbed onto the steering wheel immediately! He’ll be driving a real car before we know it.

Trent’s new ride

and a Dinosaur Ball Pit! How fun!

Brett made a breakfast pizza for Christmas morning.

Then we watched the Disney Christmas Parade and opened our gifts. Did you know that the Christmas parade is actually filmed earlier in the month and NOT on Christmas day? I shocked quite a few people with that tidbit of info the past few days.

Brett’s gift to me…a new Keurig! We’re back in business after my last one kicked the bucket. I got Brett a KitchenAid 6 quart Professional Stand Mixer, but gave it to him a month early so he can make all kinds of yummy goodies in the meantime. I got a fantastic deal on it ($115 after a sale, cash back and discount codes-originally $550) making each yummy cookie/cake/pancake all the more delicious.

Trent got…

We’ve been wanting to get him this Pirate Ship Rocker since we saw it a few months ago on Zulily. He just wanted to bite it.

It’s so FLUFFY!

Eat the paper!

Baby iPad

Trent sure was quick to take his nap afterwards….Christmas is tiring!

This allowed us to tidy up the house in time for family members to start arriving for desserts, coffee and more gifts.

We had the day off from making desserts, but as you will find with Brett, that doesn’t mean he was going to take a complete break from making anything! He made some crockpot hot chocolate (aka cup of almost-fudge) and a large punchbowl of strawberry champagne. Yes, I had some and it was delicious.

Other desserts included Key Lime pie, cinnamon roll apple pie, pumpkin bars and these super cute chocolate mice made from Hershey’s Kisses and chocolate covered cherries.

More paper to eat!

It was a lovely Christmas. For those that celebrate, we hope you enjoyed your holiday too! Anyone else celebrate baby’s first Christmas?

Gangnam Style Christmas

As we are winding down on a wonderful first Christmas for Trent, I wanted to share a Jib Jab video my sister-in-law made a few weeks ago…it’s Trent in his own Gangnam Style video!

Happy Holidays!

Poor Santa

Seeing Trent meet Santa for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I decided he was pretty much the most awesome kid ever about it. I mean, he smiled and just kept rubbing his hand across Santa’s beard.

It totally could have gone the complete opposite way. Yeah, you’ve seen them…those photos of kids acting as if they are sitting on the Boogeyman’s lap, not the jolly fat man they’ve been told brings them presents and happiness every year. Of course, our surroundings were much different…everything is better when Nana’s around and the mall can be overwhelming to say the least. Whenever I see these types of photos, I always feel bad for the Santas…

“Do I smile?”
“Do I pretend like this kid didn’t just pee his pants on my lap?”
“Do I give this kids something to cry about?”
“Damn, I don’t make enough money!”

Oftentimes I notice that these Santas don’t even look like Santa, so that’s enough to make a kid flip out too. STRANGER DANGER!

So I think I’ll skip bringing Trent to Mall Santa and laugh at these hilarious Santa photos instead.

Here’s a photo of my friend’s daughter with Santa…can you tell she’s not a fan?

Santa knew there was not going to be any smiling going on, so he decided to make it a memorable photo by doing his own pose. Give this Santa a raise.

Here are a couple of links to more silly Santa photos:

Also, in keeping with the Christmas theme, I saw this slideshow of awesome gift-wrapping yesterday morning and immediately felt the urge to amp up my gift-wrapping efforts.

Seriously, the IKEA monkey has his own wrapping paper

That last one doesn’t surprise me at all though. One year, Brett didn’t even wrap my gifts. He just brought them out of the bedroom and into the living room in a pillowcase. A white one too, it wasn’t even Christmas themed. I would take the gift out and then he would go get another one and put it in the pillowcase and bring it out to me. I don’t even know what else to say about it…I’ll just shake my head and move on.

So here’s to hoping your holiday is full of gifts that aren’t in pillowcases!
