Product Review: Neutrogena Cosmetics

A few months ago, I stumbled upon BzzAgent, a site/program that selects people to try out certain products for free in return for an honest review of them. A few weeks after joining (for free!), I was selected to participate in the Neutrogena Cosmetics campaign. Holla for free makeup!

I must admit, I was excited to participate, but my feelings on makeup are a little weird. My skin is terrible…my whole life I’ve had breakouts. It’s not that my entire face is covered, but there has never been a single day where I am not having to cover up something, whether it be a pimple or a dark spot from where I had one before. Because of this, I have used Clinique items for the past few years because it hasn’t made my skin worse…which is better than nothing I suppose. Well, that crap ain’t cheap and waiting for Bonus Time can be a real pain. So over time, I’ve tried slowly converting my skin cleansing and makeup routine over to items I could find in Target. Not all at once though, just in case I had a reaction or something I could pinpoint what caused it.

So although I have tried using Neutrogena products and I have stuck with just their Healthy Skin Liquid Foundation, I always get a little nervous when trying new skin stuff. But I would never know if something is better than what I’m using unless I try it, right? So let’s do this!

In my Neutrogena Cosmetics package from BzzAgent, I received the following items:

One (1) Nourishing Eyeliner in Cosmic Black 10
Three (3) Revitalizing Lip Balms in the following colors:
1. Healthy Blush 20
2. Sunny Berry 30
3. Petal Glow 40
One (1) Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Perfector

I also got some coupons to pass out to friends and family. Target just happened to have a store coupon available at that time, so I kept one of the coupons and used it along with the Target store coupon for a super discount.

Nourishing Eyeliner in Cosmic Black 10

Product Description:
Neutrogena® Nourishing Eyeliner defines and brightens eyes with luminous color. Subtle light diffusers make the whites of eyes appear whiter, while rich color nourishes skin with Olive Oil and Rainforest Shea Butter. The built-in sharpener gives precise definition and the contoured smudger softens and blends for a variety of looks.

  • Infused with olive oil and rainforest shea butter to condition the delicate skin around your lashes
  • Creamy automatic pencil glides on smoothly, then transforms into long-lasting finish that won’t budge
  • Built-in sharpener and smudger allow to create the perfect look–from precise definition to smoky effect

This was what I was looking forward to trying the most. I literally JUST ran out of my previous eyeliner. I normally use Aveda black eyeliner, but it can be difficult to travel to the salon to get it when I run out and it’s pretty expensive. Mass retail brands don’t usually go on as smooth as I’d like, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It goes on real smooth, but it doesn’t go on extremely dark though. So what I had to do was put it on before my eye shadow in order to get the baseline, then put on eye shadow, then put another line over the eye shadow. It also doesn’t stay put if I happen to touch my eye, especially the corners, it rubs off immediately.

I do really like the twist feature, so I don’t have to worry about sharpening every few days like with normal eyeliner pencils. On the other end is a tool to create a smokey eye. I didn’t use this, as I prefer more of a clean line, especially at work.

It is sold on the Neutrogena website for $7.49. Not bad in my opinion. I will probably continue to use this product in the future.

I am definitely a chapstick girl. Not necessarily THE actual Chapstick brand, just any type of lip balm. Usually if I want more color, I will put on chapstick first and then some lipstick over it, so it never lasts very long and I have to carry around two products. To me, lipstick by itself is too harsh and dry, but sometimes I want a little color too. Ugh, what’s a girl to do? ;)

These worked perfectly for that. They provide the smoothness and creaminess of chapstick, with a hint of color. Because it is lip balm, it did require reapplying every so often, but I would do that with regular chapstick anyway. A few added bonuses are that it has SPF 20, a great scent and if I accidentally tasted it, I didn’t want to throw up like when I taste some other lip products.

The Sunny Berry (reddish color) was a little bold for my taste, but I really liked the other two colors. I kept one in my purse and one in my bathroom.

It sells for $8.99 on the Neutrogena site. While I like this product, I’m not sure it is worth $8.99. The true test is if I can make it to the end of the dang container before losing it or putting it in the washer/dryer and it getting all over my clothes.

This was my least favorite product out of the group. I use concealer every day and my current concealer is Maybelline Superstay 24hr Concealer. The main thing I didn’t like about this was the twist feature. The first time I used it, I twisted the container at least 20 times to get the concealer to come out onto the brush. When I got around 15 or so clicks, I started getting hesitant and paused between each twist and then all of a sudden a bunch got pushed up and I had to wipe it off.

The second time I used it was a little better, but still had extra leftover. There is no control over how much comes out or any way to put it back in.

Wasted product = No Bueno.

The color was a pretty good match for my skin, but the concealer felt a little greasy. I also didn’t think it was thick enough and therefore didn’t provide the level of coverage I desired. I’m not sure if “gentle” should be listed as a product feature, since I did manage to accidentally get it in my eye one time and it stung pretty bad, which my usual concealer doesn’t do.

I also don’t quite understand why a concealer would have SPF in it. Luckily, my liquid foundation has SPF in it, but that covers my entire face. Concealer is meant to be used only on certain spots or under your eye, so you are only getting spotty SPF coverage with this. To me, that seems a little unnecessary and probably contributed to the greasiness factor.

Honestly, I used it 3 times and stopped. I just didn’t like it and was tired of making a mess with it. I also prefer a concealer that is meant for more than just the eye area and can cover dark spots and pimples.

If you are interested in trying it out, you can find it on Amazon HERE and it sells on the Neutrogena site for $11.99.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my first BzzAgent campaign. I found 1-2 products that I might continue adding to my beauty routine!
